talk to the watering can - CiCi Blumstein 2009

Fresh from this year’s Festival of Architecture, the Woman with Watering Can [that’s me] continues her playful investigations of the private choreography of public space, urban planning & creative space, and of course, reclining in public …

Coming up: talk to the watering can, a chance to air your views about green space in spontaneous mini-interviews conducted by the Woman with Watering Can, and recorded directly into her – you guessed it – watering can. Is there enough green space in your neighbourhood? Could you adopt a lonely green space to look after? How much green space do you really need? – these are just some of the questions she will be keen to investigate.

These field recordings will be collected and fed into my new installation entitled The Green Felt, opening in September, and leading up to PARK[ing] Day Brighton 2009. More details to follow soon …

PARK[ing] Day Brighton is coming!

The first ever PARK[ing] Day in Brighton will take place on Friday, 18 September 2009, featuring art installations, wind power, performance, green space measuring with the Woman with Watering Can and more. I am working in partnership with Blank Gallery & Studios to organize the event.

In the run-up to Park[ing] Day, my new interactive installation The Green Felt will slowly grow into an indoor allotment in Blank’s main gallery space, using plant contributions and green space measurements taken from visitors. The gallery will turn into an eco hub of activity for the local community, schools, businesses and artists based at Blank, working together to prepare for Park[ing] Day. Further information to follow – watch this space …

About PARK[ing] Day:

PARK(ing) Day is an annual, one-day, global event where artists, activists, and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spots into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public parks.

Anyone can participate in PARK(ing) Day, though it is strictly a non-commercial project, intended to promote creativity, civic engagement, critical thinking, unscripted social interactions, generosity and play. San Francisco art collective REBAR first created “PARK(ing)” in 2005 to re-imagine the potential of the metered parking space. In 2006, in collaboration with TPL [Trust for Public Land], REBAR founded “PARK(ing) Day”: a global exploration of the creative potential of streets.
